Visit Portugal Birdwatching

Visit Portugal Birdwatching is the booking face of Birds & Nature Tours Portugal, founded in 2008 by biologist and former pharmaceutical executive Joao Jara. Jara holds a biology degree from the Faculdade de Ciencias de Lisboa, served on the board of SPEA, and chaired the Portuguese Rarities Committee from 2007 to 2011. The company offers private guided birding and bird photography across Portugal's most productive regions, including the Lisbon estuaries, the Alentejo plains, and the Algarve. Trip lengths range from half-day or full-day outings around Lisbon to short breaks, week-long holidays, and fully tailored itineraries; a small number of scheduled group tours (minimum four, maximum seven participants) run alongside the bespoke programme. Jara guides personally in English and Portuguese and is a regular presence at international events such as the British Birdwatching Fair, the Falsterbo Bird Show, and the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival. He also has an active interest in herpetology and freshwater fish, which he weaves into broader nature itineraries on request.
