About
Ruggedy Range is a locally owned wildlife guiding company based in Oban on Stewart Island/Rakiura, operating since 2000. The team specialises in kiwi-spotting expeditions and forest birding on Stewart Island and the predator-free sanctuary of Ulva Island, where Southern Brown Kiwi (Tokoeka) can be seen in daylight at unusually high densities.
The operator holds a Department of Conservation concession and a Qualmark Silver award, and runs small-group trips that combine birding with botanical and natural history interpretation. Guides such as Furhana are noted for combining bird ID with broader knowledge of native flora and Stewart Island's endemic fauna.
