About
Richard Raby is a British expatriate birding guide who has been based on the Rio de Janeiro coast for more than two decades, operating from a purpose-built naturalist's lodge on a coastal lagoon at Maricá, about an hour from Rio's international airport. He is a registered IBAMA field researcher and has worked across South America for over twenty years.
His tours focus on Southeast Atlantic Forest endemics — the highly localised Restinga and Hooded Antwrens, Grey-winged Cotinga in the Serra dos Órgãos, Three-toed Jacamar in inland Rio de Janeiro state, and Brazilian Merganser further afield — and he also runs custom butterfly and insect photography trips. Trips are private and bilingual.
