About

Rainforest Expeditions is a Peruvian ecotourism company founded in 1989/1992 by Eduardo Nycander and Kurt Holle, built around the idea that authentic Amazon experiences and active conservation should fund one another. The company is headquartered in Puerto Maldonado and operates three lodges deep inside the Tambopata National Reserve in Madre de Dios. The flagship properties — Posada Amazonas (a partnership with the Infierno indigenous community), Refugio Amazonas and the remote Tambopata Research Center — give birders access to oxbow lakes, terra firme forest and the famous Colpa Colorado clay lick, where hundreds of Scarlet, Red-and-green and Blue-and-yellow Macaws gather each morning. Other regulars on the lists include Harpy Eagle, Hoatzin and Pale-winged Trumpeter. A new lodge, Kuaii Amazonas, is scheduled to open in 2027.
