About
Cayaya Birding is the Guatemala-City and Antigua-based birding outfit founded in 2003 by German ornithologist Knut Eisermann and Guatemalan biologist Claudia Avendano. The pair are conservation scientists with twenty-plus years of field research, co-authors of the Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Guatemala (2007) and an owls specialty publication, and they continue to publish actively on Guatemalan avifauna.
The company runs day trips out of Antigua and Guatemala City as well as full multi-region tours of three to twenty-one days, working all of Guatemala's biogeographic zones from the Pacific slope at Los Tarrales up through the Atitlan and Cuchumatanes highlands and across to the Caribbean lowlands and Tikal. Cayaya is the de facto reference operator for Guatemalan owls (nine-species itineraries) and for the Horned Guan on the Atitlan volcano.
