Birding Africa

Birding Africa is a Cape Town-based pan-African birding tour company that has operated trips across the continent since the late 1990s. Their footprint is unusually wide — South Africa is home base, but they run regular tours in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Ghana, Gabon, São Tomé, and Morocco — making them one of the few operators with serious experience in difficult West and Central African destinations alongside the East African circuit. In Kenya their itineraries target the full speciality set: Arabuko-Sokoke for Sokoke Scops Owl and Fischer's Turaco, the Taita Hills for Taita Apalis, the Aberdares and Kinangop for Aberdare Cisticola and Sharpe's Longclaw, Mount Kenya for Abbott's Starling, Kakamega for the Guineo-Congolian forest birds, and the northern arid zone around Marsabit and Buffalo Springs for Williams's Lark and other restricted-range species. The company emphasises that Kenya hosts more than 1,100 species and 20-plus endemics and near-endemics. Birding Africa's tour leaders include Michael Mills (a frequent Kenya tour leader) alongside South African and partner-country specialists. Tours run as scheduled small-group departures and as private custom trips.
